When it comes
to vices, singer Shawn Colvin has never been picky. "I've
got weaknesses for just about everything," she says. "Sugar,
high-fat foods, cheese, fried things and desserts." Thankfully,
she has learned being virtuous can be almost as much fun. Two years
ago, feeling fatigued and flabby from the fast-food and late nights
of touring, she hired personal trainer Sarah Scott to improve her
eating and whip her into shape. "Sarah got me running and doing
weight training -- that, plus the wheat-free, dairy-free diet she
put me on, made a rockin' combo," says
Colvin, 43, who soon shed 12 pounds. Having baby Caledonia in July
1998 wreaked temporary havoc with her regime ("I was sleep-deprived
and in hideous shape"), but she got back on track. "I'm
not a poster child for nutrition, but I'm [better] than I was,"
says Colvin, who has a standing appointment -- for hiking, swimming,
basketball or whatever strikes her fancy -- with Scott six days
a week. And now when Colvin's on the road, her good habits go along
for the ride. "Touring musicians are far more likely to stay
fit than they were 20 years ago," she says. Lucky thing. "That
lifestyle will kill you."
